Kyo Choi’s play for New Earth Theatre, directed by Ria Parry at the Arcola — nominated for the Off West End Award for Video Design in 2022. Seoul, 1991: three women’s lives intertwine around the UN investigation into the ‘comfort women’ of the Second World War. A play about historical truth and those who would rather it remain buried.
TK Hay’s set — a collage of papers — gave the video design a surface that was already about documentation and evidence. The design draws heavily on real-life documentary footage, working the archive material into the live action so that history and the present are in constant conversation. The lighting and video work together on a piece where both have a lot to carry.
