Black Love
A new play by Chinonyerem Odimba for Paines Plough and tiata fahodzi, directed by Katie Posner and Odimba. Aurora and Orion — sister and brother — live together in their small London flat, surrounded by the memories of their parents’ love. When that love is threatened, they have to find their way back to each other and to what it means to love whilst Black. The piece draws on real-life stories, imagined worlds, and new songs rooted in an R&B inheritance.
The video and lighting design toured nine venues across the UK through the summer and autumn of 2021. Working across that range of spaces — from a Brixton park to regional producing houses — meant building a design flexible enough to hold the intimacy of the domestic world onstage while still scaling. The visual language stays close to the emotional register of the piece: personal, present, lit from within.
